Atasi’s Artifact

I created this assignment after a conversation with other critical educators during a TLC workshop entitled Critically Engaging Race and Racism in the Classroom. As a teacher educator, I was seeking ways to critically question math curricula while also preparing students for the rigorous requirements of teacher certification (ie. high stakes testing, etc.). This assignment was given to students at the beginning of the semester.

This assignment provided a context of students math experiences from which I structured the semester. For example, I utilized exit cards at the end of class to elicit how students were making sense of concepts or if they had lingering questions or concerns. Most classes were also structured in a way that allowed students to explore concepts from the perspective of a teacher thinking through student work.
